British Culture I surveys the ideas, individuals, and events that shaped British culture from the earliest times up to the present. Lectures in British Culture I are easier to understand than in previous years; the most challenging discussions have been moved to British Culture II. In British Culture I students learn how Britain's cultural exchanges with people in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa influenced and informed British culture. Students will also learn how different communities within Britain shaped the evolution of British culture. We watch videos, listen to music, and visit interesting websites. Stonehenge, music, tea, art, architecture, King Arthur, Elizabeth I, slavery, Christianity, magic, witchcraft, women writers, British sports, Charles Darwin, Charlie Chaplin, Margaret Thatcher, Brexit and Megxit are some of the topics we will discuss. All foreign students from any department are welcome.

達成目標/Course objectives
|
British Culture I surveys British culture from its earliest forms up to the present. British Culture I will benefit any student hoping to better understand modern Britain. The main objectives of British Culture I are to improve students' English skills; to increase student knowledge and interest in British culture and ideas; and to prepare students for advanced discussions of key topics in British Culture II and in other classes. Attending and preparing regularly greatly improves outcomes. Students need to be ready to write an in-class essay at the end of the term to achieve the highest grades. Lectures are relaxed and respectful of others. Students are assigned very little homework. However, speaking English outside class often is highly recommended. Watching videos about British culture and listening to British English will also help enhance the course experience, build confidence, and improve TOEFL and IELTS test results. We make time at the end of each lecture for discussion and questions. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Hello! My current research interest is the French painter Theodore Gericault and his circle. (https://gericaultlife.com) That said, I have been studying British culture and literature formally since 1989. I arrived in Japan in 1992 and joined the Renaissance Institute at Sophia University as a research scholar studying Shakespeare. I completed my graduate degree in History at Harvard University Extension School in 2010 and followed that with doctoral studies in History at Queen Mary University of London. I teach English communication, presentation skills, writing, and research skills at Aoyama and two other universities in Kanto. This lecture class is relaxed and low-key. See you in class!
